Behind The Design

Maris Photography is essentially a collection — a collection of wedding prints framed on the wall and your dried wedding bouquet hanging next to them, a collection of paintings in a museum and the love notes in your drawer, a collection of seashells from your travels and the sand in the bottom of your car. To represent this in the branding, we utilized a boldly romantic, experimentally artful, and subtly minimal style to bring focus to the balance between the Renaissance painterly style of the images and the peaceful ocean-soft approach to the client experience.

The poetic mixture of vintage, organic, and earthy typography is the main focus of the identity — used to embody both art and sea motifs throughout, as the brand is rooted in both Renaissance artistry and ocean attributes (with its name, Maris” meaning “of the sea”). The primary font was inspired by those found on stone carvings and is essentially an expression of the ancient and sacred tradition of lettering. This font was chosen as an ode to previous artful practices (Renaissance art, sculpture, etc). The “S” and “M” in the primary logo is artfully elongated to showcase the feeling of an ocean tide, the tranquil dance back and forth, as well as the painterly quality of brush strokes on a canvas.

We wanted the digital home for Maris to feel like a collection, like your wooden memory box filled with film from your grandparent’s basement or the glass jar filled with seashells from your recent travels. It was designed to showcase Maris’s artistry and work while inviting clients to imagine what it would be like to create together, transporting them to a dreamy space that bring poetry to life through texture, words, and imagery.
